Music and fashion will continue to coexist. Music development will continue to influence fashion and vice versa. Kallula Harsynta Esterlita, a Jakarta-based singer/songwriter perfectly embodies those two aspects and represents them well in her works and life.
“Fashion has always been a part of me, ever since I was little, I have always loved things revolving around fashion. I used to wear my Mom’s lipstick. I guess I can sense that I love fashion ever since a kid,” stated this 29-year-old woman that had just finished her tour with her band, Kimokal, around the UK.
Not only fashion, apparently her love for music grew since she was little. Thanks to her piano teacher that asked her to randomly sing, and realized that Kallula has a lot more talent in music, and that is, singing. She started her music career by creating LCD Trip - a rock-alternative band - then she falls in love with Electronic Music. “I used to hate electronic music, there was this time when all electronic music was like a kind of music that is just too rough for me. Then I fall in love when I realized, internationally, not all EDM music is the same. There are different Electronic music genres too, and one of them is Electronic Pop.”
Then her love for Electronic Pop music is being shed in all of her works in Kimokal. Kimokal is a pop electronic duo that has been to many places in the world. Kallula and her partner, Kimo, actively making hits since its first launch in 2014. “One of the best experiences ever was Djakarta Warehouse Project (DWP). I forgot if it was a year or two years ago, but it was amazing! It was the first time I played music in front of thousands of people. They were all singing our song, I was having a mixed-feeling kind of moment just there. I did not know whether I was supposed to cry or enjoy it. It was life-changing.” Not only locally, but internationally, Kimokal had been played on several stages. One of them was, SXSW, a Conference & Festival celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries in Texas, USA.
How about her role model? Lykke Li, a Swedish singer/songwriter, and model. “I love Lykke Li! She has her own uniqueness. She is really proud of what she is, who she is, and that inspires me.” Ever met her? “Yes! Met her once. I was having this breakfast in LA, Melrose, then she walked by me. I was with a friend and started panicking, I thought to myself, is that really her? Apparently, it was. I took a picture with her, and throughout the photo session I was shaking and nervous. Imagine that! Meeting your idol ever since you were in high school!”
